Keynote Address
H.E. Nasser Bin Hamad M. Al-Khalifa
Ambassador of the State of Qatar
Al-KhalifaNasser Bin Hamad M. Al-Khalifa became ambassador of Qatar to the United States and nonresident ambassador to Mexico on Oct. 3, 2005. Ambassador Al-Khalifa previously served as ambassador to the United Kingdom and nonresident ambassador to Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway, as well as Qatar’s permanent representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the International Maritime Organization (2000-05). In addition, he served as ambassador at-large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1998-2000), Qatar’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York and nonresident ambassador to Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Cuba and Nicaragua (1996-98), as well as head of the Qatari Delegation to Canada and Norway (1995-97). He has also held posts as ambassador to Korea (1992-93) and Italy (1994-96) with nonresident ambassador status to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Malta.

Ambassador Al-Khalifa was also head of the European and American Affairs Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1990-92), deputy chief of mission at the Qatari Embassy in France (1986-87), deputy chief of mission at the Qatari Embassy in Washington, D.C. (1981-86), and first secretary at the Qatari Mission to the United Nations in New York (1978-81).

He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Western Michigan University, a master’s degree in international public policy from Johns Hopkins University and a law degree from the City University in the United Kingdom. He was also a fellow at Princeton University and a visiting fellow at the Centre for Islamic Studies in Oxford, as well as a candidate for a doctorate in international affairs from the London School of Economics.

Dr. Philip Salem
SalemDr. Philip A. Salem, physician, researcher and educator, has 38 years of experience in cancer research and treatment. He received training in cancer medicine at the two major cancer centers in America: Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He was professor of cancer medicine at M.D. Anderson before being appointed Director of Cancer Research at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, and established Salem Oncology Centre in 1991.

He is an active member of the top three cancer organizations in the world: American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Association of Cancer for Research (AACR) and European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO). He was selected in annual editions of America’s Top Doctors. He was inducted into the American Biographical Institute’s “Hall of Fame” for outstanding contributions to cancer research and education. Dr. Salem has authored over one hundred research publications and in recognition for his contributions, he has been selected to serve on the editorial boards of several distinguished cancer journals.

He was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor by National Ethnic Coalition Organization (NECO) for his “exceptional humanitarian efforts and outstanding contributions to America”.  In July, 2004 a book entitled “Philip Salem, The Man, The Homeland, The Knowledge” authored by Peter Indari, an Australian journalist, was launched in Beirut, Lebanon. On March 24, 2006 he was honored as “The Scientist of the Year” by La Foundazione Foedus Impresa Solidarietá (a National Italian Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Culture Founded by Mr. Mario Bacci, Minister of Publish Affairs) in a special ceremony held in Rome.

Dr. Rola el-Husseini
el-HusseiniRola el-Husseini holds a BA from the American U. of Beirut, an M.A. from the University of London and a Ph.D. in Political Sociology from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris.

From 2001 to 2003 she was a research associate at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, (German Institute for International and Security Affairs) in Berlin with a pre-doctoral fellowship from the Ford Foundation. Between January 2004 and June 2005, she was a postdoctoral associate at the Yale Center for International and Areas Studies and a lecturer in the Sociology department at Yale University.

At the Bush School, she teaches courses on Middle East Politics, Political Islam, and the Arab-Israeli Conflict, among other issues and provides the Bush School with expertise in its core faculty in the Middle East. Her current research focuses on elite politics in postwar Lebanon and she will begin a comparative study of the role of Iran on Iraqi and Lebanese Shia political thought.
